Things you only notice in deadly weapons after seeing it again

Watching “Deadly Weapon” in the latest restoration in the highest possible resolution and with the pause button ready is a great way to capture all the little details you may have missed. But you also find some things that Donner reckoned you could not see.

Take, for example, the iconic scene where Riggs tries to talk a man from a ledge. When he commits suicide himself, he’s probably not the best man for the job, and his … let’s say the unique police force scares that poor guy. Finally, Riggs ties himself to the jumper and takes a jump from the ledge. Luckily, while Riggs was distracting him, the other officers had put a pillow for them to land safely on.

At first glance, you are probably too caught up in the drama of the moment not to take the stunt at face value. But look again. These plug cuffs break clean in two when the characters jump. It’s not subtle either – they click like an elastic band. The stuntmen do what they can to cover it by holding in their hands, but once you see it, you can’t remove it. But film magic is not that different from ordinary magic. The secret is wrong redirection, and as long as you are aware of the story, you will never notice the error.
