The last time both viewers and members of the Umbrella Academy see Lila, she uses a briefcase to escape to an unknown place and time. At this point, Lila is quite upset by the Hargreeves family when she discovers that her adoptive mother, Handler (Kate Walsh), had number five (Aidan Gallagher) murdered Lila’s biological mother so she could control Lila and her powers. Although she was originally introduced as Diego (David Castañeda) with a psychiatric patient and love interest, Lila turns out to be far more important for season 2 than viewers originally thought. And that could happen again in season 3.
Reddit user u / helvetica_unicorn has a very interesting theory about Lila. They claim that Lila, motivated by anger, uses a briefcase to prevent the five Hargreeves children she knows from being born – which would explain why Ben, whom she does not know, survives in this timeline. In this theory, it is not that Sir Reginald deliberately chose different children – he just did not care that the people he met in 1963 never came forward, as he nevertheless saw them as disappointments.
A potential problem with this theory is that no one knows how or why the 43 children were born – except perhaps Sir Reginald, but probably not Lila. Their mothers were not pregnant at the beginning of the day, and their births were very sudden, so Lila probably could not stop the conception and birth of the five members of the Umbrella Academy. But she could have killed them as children, which is pretty brutal – but again she was brought up to be an assassin.
It looks like we’ll just have to wait and see what happens in “The Umbrella Academy” season 3.
