Wan’s Instagram post consists of a photo with a simple caption: “Day One. # Aquaman2.” The picture shows a cool place full of snow and ice. In the foreground you can see a production panel showing the film’s working title “Necrus”.
“Necrus” is both revealing and mysterious. As fans of DC’s wettest superhero know, Necrus is the name of another underwater kingdom that has a strong influence in Aquaman-centered comics. Prior to the DC Comics event “Crisis on Infinite Earths” landmark in 1985, underwater civilization was divided into several fiefdoms. One of them was Necrus, also known as “The Black City”. It’s likely that this is the same place as “Lost Kingdom” from the movie’s title, though the name change could be significant.
Necrus’ main feature is that it only appears temporarily and never in the same place. So if Wan’s photo actually shows Necrus, as it appears in the movie, it will find the city in a freezing place – at least for a while. Of course, it is also possible that Wan’s photo does not show Necrus at all, but a completely different place than the movie. At this point, all we can really say about “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” is that it’s getting cool.
This freezing place raises another question for Aquaman fans: Does this mean Jason Momoa will finally have to wear a shirt? Luckily, we’ve already seen Aquaman in a cool place before – He’s traveling to Iceland in 2017’s “Justice League”. In that scene, the answer is a resounding “no.” So yes, “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” should have everything fans need.
