Tokyo, June 27 (IANS) India is among six South Asian countries whose athletes, coaches and officials will have to take Covid-19 tests every day for seven days before traveling to Japan for the Olympic Games.
Japan’s state envoy NHK said on Sunday that athletes and all other members of delegations from India, Nepal, Pakistan, Maldives, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan will be subject to stricter countermeasures due to the widespread Delta variant, which was first identified in India, reports Xinhua.
NHK added that the measures would take effect on 1 July.
Participants from these countries have already been told to be vaccinated for seven consecutive days before entering Japan, which is not a prerequisite for athletes from other countries.
All overseas teams must have members tested twice within four days before departure and every day in principle after arrival in Japan.
Participants from Egypt, Vietnam, Malaysia, the UK and Bangladesh must also be tested daily for three days before departure.
