Seek Tendulkar’s Help to Overcome Bad Running: Gift Vessels for Kohli

Leeds, August 25 (IANS) India skipper Virat Kohli should seek the guidance of Sachin Tendulkar and draw inspiration from the maestro’s performance against Australia in the 2004 Sydney Test to return to form, said former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar.

“He should call SRT (Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar) quickly and ask what I should do?”, Gavaskar said in the air on Wednesday.

“[He should] Do what Sachin Tendulkar did in Sydney. Tell him I’m not going to play the cover drive, ”Gavaskar added.

Kohli fell to his nemesis James Anderson for just seven on the first day of the third Test here at Headingley on Wednesday, edging a delivery well outside the stump of wicketkeeper Jos Buttler as he tried to run.

This is the seventh time in 23 tests Anderson has scaled Kohli in Test match cricket. The English pacer has joined Australian spinner Nathan Lyon as a bowler to dismiss Kohli the most times in the longest format.

The Indian skipper has only collected 69 in four innings of three tests, without getting half a century.

The former India opener and captain, who was the first target of 10,000 runs in Test cricket, said Kohli chasing supplies outside the stump is worrying.

“It’s a bit of a concern for me, because he’s being fired at the fifth, sixth and even seventh stumps. In 2014, he came more out of the off-stump, ”Gavaskar added, pointing out that he was drawn to play outside the off-stump.

Tendulkar had famously played a very patient knock during the fourth Test of the 2003-04 series against Australia in Sydney. He slowed down his instincts and did not play cover drive during his stay of 613 minutes and 436 balls and scored undefeated 241. India collected 705/7 declared and had Australia under kosh before the home team managed to survive and enforce a draw.
