Sharjah, October 14 (IANS) Kolkata Knight Riders’ skipper Eoin Morgan has credited the back room for creating an atmosphere that allows young people to express themselves and to provide input that has helped the team make a big comeback in the IPL 2021 and reach the final against Chennai Super Kings.
Despite starting their IPL 2021 campaign with one win, Kolkata struggled at the end of the Indian leg with five defeats and two wins and was placed in 7th place. They made a remarkable turnaround in the UAE, winning five matches and losing only two, which helped them reach the playoffs on the basis of a superior Net Run Rate after a draw with the Mumbai Indians. One of the key factors that made the turnaround possible was the good starts they got from openers, Shubman Gill and Venkatesh Iyer.
On Wednesday, after young openers Gill and Iyer gave the team another great start, KKR lost six wickets for seven races at a time, but defeated the Delhi Capitals with three wickets and one ball left to book their place in the final on Friday. Against Chennai Super Kings. Rahul Tripathi, another youngster, helped them get past the line despite the hiccups.
“It’s a great insight into our team culture – the young guys who come in are welcome to express themselves. The back room staff has created an environment for them to do this. With the squad we have, there is expectation. Hopefully we can implement everything we have strategized, “Morgan said after the match on Wednesday night.
He said it was the team management, especially coach Brendon McCullum’s idea of elevating Iyer to the opener role in the UAE part of IPL 2021, and Madhya Pradesh all-rounder has impressed everyone with a half-century shower that has given the Indian team leadership to choose him to be part of its network during the T20 World Cup.
“Venky Iyer -Idea [his elevation] came from the coach, my God, he is a great player. Made the hunt easy, it looks like he hit another wicket, ”said Morgan about Iyer, who scored a brilliant half-century in KKR’s hunt for 136.
However, Morgan felt that his team should have won the match in a more convincing way, starting by giving its openers. He also said the team will dissect the meltdown with bats in the last four overs.
“Should have been a lot easier after the start we got, Venky (Iyer) and Gill put us on the platform. Dew came in and all, but we are in the final and we are happy to get over the line, ”Morgan said during the presentation ceremony after the match.
“Would love to win convincingly, but Capitals is a very good side. Six out of two, the odds were probably in favor of the bowling side, but Rahul Tripathi has done excellently well for us. It’s a great insight into our team culture – the young guys who come in are welcome to express themselves, “Morgan added.
Kolkata now travels to Dubai International Stadium on Friday to face the Chennai Super Kings in the final on Friday. It will be the first time since 2012 that the two teams play against each other in the final.
