Fortunately for Disney, the company gained a strong franchise in “Percy Jackson & the Olympians” when it acquired Fox. Due to the change in ownership, both “Percy Jackson & Olympians: The Lightning Thief” and “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: Sea of Monsters” are currently and in the foreseeable future available to stream on the Disney + service with a general membership. While this in itself is good news for fans of the “Percy Jackson” franchise, Disney announced even better news early last year – that a new adaptation of the TV series of the books is officially underway.
While the two original films made a great effort to create a fun and entertaining adventure for the famous characters, many people – including Riordan – had problems with how Percy’s story was adapted. Because of this, many fans have been pushing for a new remake for years now. Last May, Riordan announced that he had set up pitch meetings with Disney, and soon enough, a new TV series went green, with Riordan and his wife, Becky Riordan, playing an important role in the development of the series’ creators, writers and more (Deadline). The show is currently casting and a release date has not yet been announced.
With this good news, it might be time for fans of the book series to give the two original films another chance. Lerman and the rest of the cast of “The Lightning Thief” and “Sea of Monsters” put a lot of hard work and effort into the film adaptations, and you have to admit that even with its different editions, the film series is really entertaining.
