In the midst of all despair, a heartbreaking picture has emerged showing hundreds of Afghans crammed into massive US military cargo planes that left Kabul’s Hamid Karzai Airport on Sunday night. More than 600 people (640 to be exact) including women and children were safely evacuated from Kabul to Qatar by the US Air Force C-17 Globemaster III. Speaking to the U.S. Defense and Security News website Defense One, an official said the plane was not intended to carry such a heavy load, but panicked Afghans who had been approved to evacuate withdrew on the C-17’s half-open ramp.

“Instead of trying to force these refugees out of the plane, the crew made the decision to leave. “About 640 Afghan civilians got off the plane when it arrived at its destination,” the defense official told the portal.

Meanwhile, 10 people were killed and several more injured at Kabul airport in the last two days as thousands tried to capture planes in an attempt to flee the country shortly after the Taliban captured Kabul, local media reported.

People entered the airport from all sides despite the presence of US forces as well as troops from other nations trying to secure the evacuation of their respective citizens and Afghan local staff. Shots were fired and a storm erupted, both of which caused deaths, TOLO News said.

U.S. forces killed two gunmen. Two other people were killed after falling from a U.S. military plane during a post-take-off flight. The people had apparently grabbed the plane from the outside. Some eyewitnesses said 10 were injured, TOLO News reported.
