The 53-year-old male veterinarian who worked for an institution that studied non-human primates showed symptoms of nausea and vomiting early, a month after dissecting two dead monkeys in early March, China CDC Weekly English Platform of Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention unveiled Saturday.

The vet sought treatment at several hospitals and eventually died on May 27, the magazine said. It said that there were no fatal or even clinically obvious BV infections in China before, and thus the veterinarians’ case is the first human infection case with BV identified in China. His family members and close contacts have tested negative for the infection and are reportedly safe so far.
