According to Deadline, “Annette” debuts at the opening of the 74th annual Cannes Film Festival on July 6, 2021. It will then come to America in limited release in August. Following the theatrical run, “Annette” will debut on Amazon Prime on August 20, 2021. Irish and British streaming rights have been acquired by MUBI.
The development process for “Annette” has been long and often delayed. As discussed in “The Sparks Brothers”, the Sparks have caused several film projects to almost come off the ground, just so they wouldn’t come to anything. In the late ’70s and early’ 80s, the band was working on a film with the legendary French comic book director Jacques Tati. It would have been his last M. Hulot movie. Unfortunately, Tati was ill enough to film the project. In the ’90s, the Mael brothers almost made an adaptation of the manga “Mai, the Psychic Girl” with “Edward Scissorhands” director Tim Burton. According to Vulture, Burton lost interest, making the group angry at ever making a film. Until now.
